Youth advocacy organization, Respect the Youth, and hunger advocacy organization, Will Rap 4 Food, Inc., will campaign and solicit donations of food and supplies for the homeless leading up to distribution at local shelters on Saturday, January 12, 2013.
The two organizations, led by young entrepreneurs and activists, will partner to raise awareness and donations in the "We Have a Name" homeless advocacy campaign.
"I strongly believe in the idea that everyone was made to be heard and acknowledged. Every day I see the disenfranchised, the hurting, and the homeless get passed by as if they don’t exist. Somehow we have learned to celebrate the affluent and forget the destitute despite the same red blood that courses through the veins of both parties. This biased social point of view has to change," said Andre Hinds, Will Rap 4 Food, Inc.'s Director of Community Outreach.
According to weather forecasters, mid-to-late January historically averages as the coldest time of the year in Washington, D.C., and for the reported average of 6,500 homeless residents on any given night, it can also be one of the most difficult times. The District is reported to have one of the highest homeless rates in the country.
On the premise of the campaign, Respect the Youth leader Mohamed Leonce stated, "In order to gain respect, one must first earn respect. To earn respect one must do something that is deemed respectable. Helping the less fortunate is not only respectable but noble, and it serves as a statement saying that the younger generation has noticed our societal problems and are working on a way to solve them to the best of our abilities."
Donations will be solicited and provided to local homeless shelters with the support of the Capitol Hill Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) Homeless Ministry Team.
"Giving back and making time for those who are less fortunate is something Capitol Hill SDA Homeless Ministries has been doing for decades. It's great to share the love of God with the homeless community and encourage their faith," said Q-Exclusive, ministry team member.
